Gartner ranks Deloitte No1 Consulting Provider worldwide, in North America, and Europe

MINSK, July 14 (Prime-Tass) -- Gartner’s 2009 “Market Share Analysis: Top 10 Consulting Providers’ Revenue, Growth and Market Share, Worldwide and Regional” report ranks Deloitte’s consulting practices #1 worldwide, in North America, and in Europe based on revenue.

“This is the first time Gartner has ranked us #1 worldwide in terms of market share,” said Ainar Aijala, DTT Global Managing Partner, Consulting. “Deloitte consulting practices have outpaced growth of the consulting market for the past five years and this report represents an invaluable external validation of our continuing momentum and success worldwide.”

The ranking puts Deloitte ahead of IBM, Accenture, and PricewaterhouseCoopers in these major markets. The BearingPoint acquisition was factored into Gartner’s revenue estimations. Gartner defines consulting as those services that typically preface, enable, or influence the adoption of IT.

In worldwide rankings, Deloitte was followed by IBM, second, and PwC, third. In North America (United States and Canada), PwC took the second spot and IBM ranked third. Neither PwC nor IBM made it into the top three in Europe (Eastern and Western Europe), where Accenture came in second and Logica third. Deloitte was seventh in Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) with IBM topping the list, Samsung SDS coming in second, and Accenture third. Deloitte did not rank in the top 10 in Japan.

According to the report, the consulting market declined 9 percent in 2009, and of the 280 consulting service providers assessed for the report, only 60 had positive revenue growth.

On the winning side were business-outcome-focused providers of consulting services with established business relationships as well as providers with a broad range of services.

“As this ranking demonstrates, Deloitte member firms’ diverse One Deloitte portfolio is a true market differentiator. Through the strategy refresh and ongoing efforts to enhance our service offerings, Deloitte aims to maintain its leadership position in the market,” said Jim Quigley, CEO, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.

On the other side of the equation were consulting service providers with attributes such as pure IT focus, an unbalanced geographical split, or huge dependencies on clients in a single vertical market as well as those exposed to internal influences from other outsourcing, software, or technology businesses.

Looking ahead, Gartner expects market conditions to improve in 2010 and predicts the IT consulting market will grow by 6.2 percent in 2010.

For IT consulting service providers looking to increase market share in 2010, Gartner recommends the following:

  • Demonstrate to potential buyers how the advice sold to them will assist them not only in mitigating their financial and business risks but also in coping with economic uncertainties.
  • Reduce time spent negotiating with buyers for another (small) fixed price project. Instead, consider growing market share by investing in the development of differentiating consulting service offerings to win clients or add new talents to the consultant base.
  • Assess organization’s business performance and learn from 2009 successes and failures. Block time in 2010 with key executives and advisers to identify what needs to change in the organization’s consulting business strategy.
